Mohammad Ghazali
Mohammad Ghazali (b. 1980, Iran) received a BA in photography from the Islamic Azad Art and Architecture University of Iran and has lived and worked in Iran, France and Germany. In his art practice, Ghazali engages with the relation between urban spaces and his life story (ex. the Dredge series 2016) and sometimes others individual life stories. In his work, he conceptually documents reality, and never replaces or adds any external elements to his subjects. He keeps the settings he chooses to work with as they are, rather he re-define what he sees through his camera and the technical photographic experiments he takes pleasure in experiencing(ex. the Bad and Worse series 2017).
In 2004, he was awarded the first place prize of the 9th Tehran Photography Biennale for his work ‘Self Portrait’ which was acquired by the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art for its permanent collection. it earned him special attentions within the Iranian photographer’s circle.
In 2009, he was exhibited by Assar Art Gallery at the Paris Photo, 9th edition, curated by Catherine David with focus on the Arab and Iranian photography. The series entitled, Where the Heads of the Renowned Rest , series aims to look at Tehran from its public statues’ point of view. These statues are insulted in various locations in the city and they are all renowned historic personalities of the country. The result is a set of temperamental images, rising these questions that should these people really were to be staring at public, how contemporary life could have been perceived by them.
He has had over 20 national and international shows.
