Ali Golestaneh

  • Mohammad Golestani, better known as Ali Golestaneh, was born in Tehran in 1940. He had five brothers and two sisters. His father was a businessman from Isfahan and Ali grew up in relative economiccomfort. He began his painting career when he was quite young under the tutorship of Asghar Petgar. He graduated from Jam high school in Qolhak in 1959 and continued his education at the Fine Arts department of the University of Tehran. Among his contemporaries were; Aidin Aghdashlu, Rubin Pakbaz, Abbas Kiarostami, Hadi Hezavei, Nikzad Nejumi, Cyrus Malek, Gholam-HosseinNami, Ebrahim Jaffari, Morteza Momayez, Ali-Akbar Sadeghi, Parvaneh Etemadi. At university, he first studied oil painting under Ali- Mohammad Heydarian who focused on the human form and landscape and stressed lighting and its effect the composition. About Heydarian it has been said that of all of Kamal Ol-Molk’s students, he was the most successful at recreating the native sunlight of Iran in his paintings. This emphasis which Heydarian had on lighting was to present itself later in Golestaneh’s work.
After Houshang Seyhoun became dean of the Fine Arts department of Tehran University, the curriculum changed. It was designed after the Beaux Arts of Paris. Golestaneh, along with Aidin Aghdashloo and Roubin Pakbaz joined the studio of Behjat Sadr. As with most fine arts students, Golestaneh’s university works were portraits, still lifes and rural landscapes.( By Mona Zehtabch )
